What ESL school administrators had to say about this book…..

Experienced staff at Pacific Gateway International had this to say.  Wonderful source of cultural
advice, information for both students and Homestay families, valuable recipes also.   Recommend all

As a professional adult educator committed to the provision of high quality learning opportunities for
adults in British Columbia, Canada, it was my pleasure to be the editor of this informative book.  I
highly recommend it be used by Homestay families in North America to help ESL students have the
best cultural experience possible.

What students have to say about their Homestay experience…

As a vegetarian I was concerned about meals while attending ESL in Victoria, Canada, for three
months.  Good food is important to me especially when I am away from home and everything is so
different.  I was surprised by the variety of meals and new foods my Homestay family prepared.  So
impressed, I returned to stay with the same Homestay family on my second trip to Victoria.  I kept
telling my Homestay mom she should teach others how to cook vegetarian, and now she is through
this book.   Each recipe in this book includes a vegetarian alternative.  Now other vegetarian
students can be happy with their meals too.

Victoria was one of my destinations in Canada during a year’s trip.  I stayed in many different
homes.  In retrospect, I appreciate how lucky I was to meet my Homestay mom.  In my real life I do
not have an auntie, now I do.  My Homestay mom became very close to me and helped me with my
English and much more.  Good conversations, a bunch of casual expressions that I wanted to know,
watching films, and showing me around; most of all we laughed a lot.   I really felt at home there
since we shared many things sometimes friends and sometimes family.  We became very close and
still keep in touch.  For me it’s a great pleasure to have her in my heart.

My first experience of living in a Homestay was in France some years ago, it was not the most
positive.  But this time in Victoria has been extremely good, even though I stayed only a few weeks.
It is so nice to arrive in a foreign country and to be welcomed so warm and friendly.  I recommend
Victoria as well as the people of Victoria, and would return anytime again.
